Museums & Cultural Centers
The history of Otter Tail Country is fascinating. Did you know, the first explorers through this area in 1750 were a Frenchman and an Englishman. They met with a band of Native Americans on the shore of "Lac de la Queue de la Outer", which translates roughly to the Lake of the Otters Tail. This story and many others have been preserved at intriguing historic sites and museums throughout the county. Learn about the rich heritage of the Ojibwe and Dakota Indians. Or, visit Pelican Rapids and learn about the “Minnesota Girl.” Expand your mind by visiting the many Otter Tail Country museums, cultural centers, and historical societies. Otter Tail County Historical Society
The museum is recognized as one of the top county historical societies in Minnesota! It features exhibits which chronicle the development of Otter Tail Country from the Native Americans to the 20th Century. Tourist information, Hirloom Garden, Exhibits, Gift Shop, and E.T. Barnard Library are what the museum is all about!! They are open all year around! Go check them out. Location: 1110 West Lincoln Avenue, Fergus Falls.
New York Mills Regional Cultural Center
The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center is an innovative non-profit organization dedicated to expanding the cultural and creative opportunities of rural Americans. They offer a variety of programs, including: gallery exhibits, music series, literary and theater events, education, Great American Think-Off and the sculpture park. Location: 24 North Main Avenue, New York Mills.
Finn Creek Open Air Museum
Check out this 18 acre site for a trip back in time to the early 1900's. Activities include a children's and antique tractor pull, a sawmill powered by a steam tractor, a threshing machine and tours of an original 1900 home, log barns, an 1890 country school, a town hall, a gift shop with many Finnish imported items and a chapel (Sunday services). Craft sales and entertainment acts plus Finnish foods and refreshments. Location: 3 miles east of New York Mills.
