Clitherall
The township of Clitherall took its name from the lake of that name, and the lake took its name from Major George B. Clitherall, who was register of the United States land office at Otter Tail City from 1858 to 1861. Clitherall was first settled in 1865 by seven Mormon families seeking a more peaceful existence after the violet breaking up of Brigham Young’s church in Illinois. They were eventually joined by 10 more families. The township of Clitherall was organized on October 24, 1868. Today, Clitherall has a population of 118 and is surrounded by many lakes that offer fishing, boating, camping, nature walks and of dozens of traditional family resorts.
Plan to attend the annual Testicle Festival held the first Saturday after Thanksgiving. This tradition would no doubt receive thumbs up from many of the early settlers who were part of Old Clitherall dating back to 1865.
